Lingkod Timog conducts charitable, educational,
cultural, medical and life enrichment activities to needy areas in the
Philippines. We strive to alleviate poverty while strengthening relations
between the Philippines and the United States.
The strongest bond of human sympathy outside
the family relation should be one uniting working people of all nations and
tongues and kindreds.
Lingkod Timog was founded by Cecilia Heredia and Irene Sabban, two Philippine
naval officer wives with the humble desire to provide service to their
impoverished Filipino brothers and sisters. "With their gifts of beauty and
grace they decided to shed their light to others in God's name." Irene
recognized that the poor in Zamboanga needed urgent medical attention. Because
many of them happen to be Muslims, they are discriminated upon because of their
religious beliefs, particularly in an age of global terrorism. However, they
are innocent victims trapped in a dangerous region of the Philippines with
little access to aid. Knowing this, Lt. Gen. Juancho Sabban , Philippine Marines
then a 2003-2004 student at the Naval Command College in Newport, Rhode Island,
and his sponsor, retired Philippine Navy Captain Armando ‘Doy’ Heredia, decided
to pool resources to help the Badjaos. Cecilia formed Lingkod Timog in Rhode
Island, with Irene as Executive Director for the Philippines operations.
The Philippine Marines provided safety for the
medical missions, the Philippine Navy gave logistical backing, and Cecilia
brought in other non-profit volunteers from the United States. In addition,
they found support from the US Embassy, Philippines town officials, schools, radio
stations, hospitals and medical health practitioners. The 2005 mission was a success and they were able to
treat more 1,000 Badjaos in Zamboanga. Irene and Cecilia recognized that numerous other
Indigenous Pilipinos constantly need urgent medical
aid and services. Lingkod Timog was incorporated as a U.S. non-profit 501(c)3
organization with an operating branch in the Philippines. The
missions to Zamboanga, Basilan, Davao, Zambales, Jolo, Palawan, Davao del
Norte, Compostela Valley, and Sulu were equally successful. Lingkod Timog plans include corrective
medical missions and future preventive care and livelihood programs for tribal
